NEWS FROM THE SUNKEN GARDEN: A busy May

Sunken Gardeners

May was a busy month for the Sunken Garden Society!

We were delighted to be back at the Ellington Park May Fayre, the weather held, and a wonderful group of our volunteers  turned out in force to chat to visitors, give out free seed packets and sell. Back for a second year at the event, we met new and old friends, who supported the Sunken Garden Society by buying from the wonderful selection of beautiful plants grown by our brilliantly green fingered volunteers, with sales making a very welcome contribution to our work in the Sunken Garden. Thank you to the volunteers at Ellington Park for inviting us and for organising such a fabulous day.

The following week we found ourselves at a new event in Margate, Thrive Over 50, where we chatted with community groups from across the area and shared news of the Garden with those who hadn’t visited and many who have lovely memories and stories to tell about it.
Thanks to Karen Brinkman for putting this event together.

We’ve already mentioned the volunteers and we held a special event to celebrate them and the contribution that they make to the Sunken Garden during our Community Gardening Day at the end of May. The newly inaugurated Mayor of Margate, Cllr Leo Britcher, joined us with his Mayoress, Tamara Campbell, for cake and refreshments, then kindly presented certificates to the volunteers, before joining a tour of the Garden with a short pruning workshop.

“It was great to meet the volunteers that make and keep the sunken gardens looking so fantastic – it’s incredible to think that so much of this was done in just eight years!” Cllr Leo Britcher

It was a lovely morning, with visitors to the Garden inquisitive about the work that we do and giving serious consideration to joining us as volunteers.

We supply everything you’ll need at a Gardening Day, just dress ready to get a bit muddy and put on your sunscreen and hat, and come along to join a friendly, inclusive group of all ages who enjoy spending time outdoors and giving their time to keep the Sunken Garden looking fabulous. You don’t need to have any experience, there is always someone on hand to guide and help you.
