Volunteers’ Week is an opportunity to celebrate our volunteers at the Sunken Garden, it wouldn’t look the way it does today without the love and care that is put into it. From planting to weeding, liaising with the Council to pruning, and so much more, every hour given makes such an amazing difference.
“Most of all it is a joy to see the transformation of the garden which has been achieved by all the volunteers and I am pleased to be part of this.”
Thank you to everyone that has spent time making the Sunken Garden what it is today and helping to maintain it. It is now seven years since the Sunken Gardeners began spending their time here and we thank every one of you.
We asked the committee members what volunteering at the Sunken Garden means to them
“I have known of the Sunken Garden for over 40 years. When my children were little we spent many times with them running around playing hide and seek in the bushes, and picnics on the lawn. Back then the garden was still maintained by the council and was in good heart. Sadly, in later years it has been in a poor state. When I saw a call out for volunteers to join the committee of the Sunken Garden Revival in 2018, I thought it would be a good way to offer my financial skills. I have always been a keen gardener so this was a great way of volunteering.
“I really enjoy the company of other volunteers, when we are working in the garden, and learning from those with greater expertise. The committee work involves another interesting element, such as fundraising and planning.”

“As a new retiree, volunteering at The Sunken Garden has given me a real sense of purpose and direction.
“After years of office work, an outdoor volunteering role allows you to live the seasons and appreciate the outdoors with like minded others”
Andrew
“I first started my volunteering journey at the Kent County Show in 1992 while undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh award, and have since had some amazing opportunities, including RHS Chelsea, RHS Hampton Court, being selected as a Coronation Champion and of course the biggest privilege of all, reviving the Sunken Garden.”
